"Empowering Change and Restoring Hope"
The "Remember Me...Bring Awareness Back To The HIV/AIDS Ribbon" campaign was inspired by a recognized need for action. This initiative was founded by a Midwestern Latino from Kansas City, Missouri who identifies as a same-gender-loving man. HIV has been part of his life for over 30 years. He felt the urgency to bring this critical issue back to the forefront of public dialogue.
Despite the significant medical advancements that have transformed HIV/AIDS from a fatal diagnosis to a chronic and manageable condition, awareness and advocacy have declined over the years. This decline has not only led to persistent stigma (perhaps less than in years past), but it nonetheless still exists. A lack of education about HIV/AIDS still remains, including essential information on transmission and ongoing barriers to supportive services like housing, transportation, food and mental health care.
Recognizing this need, a small number of dedicated individuals came together with a shared vision to restore the visibility and importance of the Red Ribbon that included addressing and identifying any gaps in services. They envisioned a campaign that would unite diverse communities including those with lived experience and the affected, allies, advocates and celebrities or personalities. These communities would unite in a collective effort to reignite conversations about HIV/AIDS, combat stigma and tackle the other complex issues associated with this manageable health condition.
Drawing inspiration from successful awareness campaigns of the past, they decided to combine modern and non-traditional methods and leverage them in a way to reach a broader audience.
The campaign aims to create community chapters, organize summits and town-halls, and use various forms of media to help reach others. It will also include extensions in its foundational make up to include Education, Advocacy, Collaboration, Mental Health and Research while incorporating an "all ages" component throughout.
Through this collaborative approach, the "Remember Me...Bring Awareness Back To The HIV/AIDS Ribbon" campaign seeks to restore the Red Ribbon's prominence, honor the memory of those lost to HIV/AIDS, and empower individuals and communities to take action to address this ongoing epidemic.
The desired final design was to be something that blended the past with the present and future, while remaining simple.
It was created to be a conversation starter, as increased discussions and communication are key outcomes of the Remember Me...Campaign (RMC).
The two ribbons in the background (on the sides) show 1) the once highly recognized symbol 2) the unity of those with lived experience and affected individuals (allies, advocates, celebrities and/or personalities) The ribbon in the foreground shows the resurgence of the symbol as not only being recognized, but as it being “highly” recognized once again to include the much-needed discussions and education. Also, it shows the actual name of the campaign along with it being held up or supported by the other two.
This campaign is about more than just bringing awareness back to the HIV/AIDS ribbon. Yes, that is a key focus. There is much more to Remember Me...Campaign (RMC).
The campaign is also built upon the foundational extensions or pillars that include Education, Advocacy, Collaboration, Mental Health and Research while incorporating an inclusive "all ages" approach integrated throughout.
RMC strives to be a campaign that is focused on being comprehensive.
